MICHALAKIS WINERY
Thanks to our Cretan roots, we have inherited the love and passion for wine and these, in turn, compel us to acquire knowledge, and broaden our horizons, while constantly perfecting our expertise.

1962 Foundation of the company "George MICHALAKIS’ Sons". This resulted in the present viticulture and wine production activities.
1965 The red wine "Palaios Michalaki", as well as the LATO collection wines was bottled for the first time, using the facilities and machinery, which are exhibited at the family Wine Museum. This event signals the course of bottling on Crete.
1980 The company’s legal status changed to a ‘Societe Anonyme’ Company, while also settling into new facilities. Today the facilities comprise a modern distribution network as well as a storage space of 6000m2.
2000 Foundation of the company "MICHALAKIS Vineyards S.A". This company manages the viniculture on the 440 acres of the "Emmanuel MICHALAKIS Estate" and the new winery in the estate.

The best reward for our endeavours is the love shown by people from many different countries. This bounds us to ceaselessly produce exquisite wines, such wines of fine aromas and flavors, which can be enjoyed during many beautiful moments.

In the center of the isle of Crete, high on the hills where nature's beauty beckons from all directions and history has lost its way in the cool and wet sea winds blowing in, you will find Michalakis' vineyards and winery. Here, where Vathypetro's ancient vine-press is situated at the west edge of the valley, since 2500 B.C., on the opposite slopes our vines today are nurtured by the conditions, Mother Nature has provided.

High up, against the slopes of this beautiful valley, where the winemaking history is lost in the ages, at an altitude of 550 meters, some 32 kilometers from Iraklion city, MICHALAKIS Estate is situated. 43 hectares of wine land; it is known that it was originally part of the Saint George Epanosifi Monastery farm, the oldest on the island.

Our story begins in 1962, when the company "George Michalakis' Sons" was established and this resulted in the present “Michalakis Estate”. Ancient local varieties join harmoniously with internationals, born in a natural environment endued with streams and hills. The Cretan indigenous varieties Vidiano, Thrapsathiri, Plyto, Dafni, Muscat of Spina & Malvasia di Candia, are cultivated on the slopes of our estate, together with the classic locals, Vilana, Kotsifali & Mandilaria. The vine collection is compiled with single vineyards of the cosmopolitan Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, Chardonnay & Sauvignon Blanc.

Today, our winery commands a spectacular view of its scenic surroundings as it is situated on the highest hill of the estate. This boundless vista is certainly a creative hint of the making of our inspired wines. The true secret lies in our blessed soils, our favorable climate conditions and the north wind of the Aegean Sea and perhaps most importantly, the vision of our people.
